Eligibility Requirements
The primary goal of the PRIME program is to train junior level faculty who have an interest in broadening the demographic profile of biomedical research in the heart, lung, blood, and sleep domains.
To be eligible to participate in a PRIME Institute Training Program, you must:
- Be a full-time research-oriented junior-level faculty member* holding a doctoral degree, such as a PhD, MD, DO, DVM or transitioning** post-doctorate trainee
- If you have been awarded a substantial grant as a PD/PI such as an R01 you will be not be considered junior-level faculty. You may have been awarded these grants and still be considered junior.
- Be a Citizen or Permanent Resident of the United States
- Have a research focus that is centered on heart, lung, blood, or sleep disorders; health disparities relevant to heart, lung, blood, or sleep disorders; or relevant research methodologies and approaches specific to these areas including implementation science.
- Agree to career tracking for up to ten years after training is completed
- Has not attended a previous PRIME/SIPID cohort
- Be able to devote 5% protected time and effort throughout program
- Be able to devote 100% effort to all program activities
*Junior-level Faculty Rank designation: Typically, junior-level faculty ranks include ‘Instructor’ or ‘Assistant’ Professor, although other ranks are possible depending on University. While ‘Associate’ Professor is often considered mid-level (not junior-level), it may be considered junior-level with justification on a case-by-case basis.
**Transitioning means that you have or will have received a formal faculty appointment by the time the Summer Institute Program convenes and no longer be supported on a training grant.
Complete and submit the PRIME Pre-Application Form
If you meet the eligibility criteria for PRIME participation we will ask for a full PRIME Application Form that includes:
- Current CV and/or Biosketch
- Two letters of reference from Department Chair / Division Head and Colleague / Mentor, requested directly from the contact information submitted in the Application
- Separate one-page summaries of:
- Your educational and research background
- Brief overview of your research plans and interests
- Additional site specific requests

Please send us your name/email to PRIME Coordination Center and you will be notified when applications are open.
Your application will be forwarded to the appropriate program site for review. You will be notified of its status. If you do not meet the eligibility criteria for PRIME participation, we will contact you within three weeks of receiving your pre-application. If you are unsure of your eligibility go ahead and fill out a pre-application and we will get back to you.
