The goal of the Cardiovascular Summer Institute Program at State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, NY, is to instruct clinicians/scientists in multidisciplinary approaches to research cardiovascular health. To accomplish its goals, the Institute attracts a cadre of qualified clinicians/scientists who have great potential to contribute to the state of current knowledge in cardiovascular research. The program has been in existence for over 18 years and has trained more than 132 scholars from 103 different universities nationwide. Cardiovascular Summer Institute Program is uniquely defined by:
- Its collaboration with community-based organizations specializing in improving health outcomes.
- The living laboratory of Brooklyn, New York, an urban setting in which to conduct cardiovascular research.
- Well renowned faculty from all over the nation.
- A historical context providing 18 years of experience in training and supporting junior investigators

- Seed funds to generate preliminary data towards a full K- or R-grants application The Cardiovascular Summer Institute will continue to cultivate a strong cohort of talented early-career researchers in cardiovascular health.
The Cardiovascular Summer Institute remains committed to build on this success and years of experience via the following specific aims:
- Select and train qualified junior scientists/clinicians with the potential to contribute to the knowledge of cardiovascular health research.
- Provide long-term tailored one-to-one and peer mentoring with the goal of submitting a research grant application.
- Provide intensive individualized training and guidance in grant writing and peer review to enhance the capacity for success in research careers.
