UVA STRIVE Program

March 06, 2023

In 2022, the University of Virginia Cancer Center created the Short-Term Research Initiative for Visiting Educators (STRIVE program) as a mutually beneficial opportunity for faculty from minority-serving institutions to partner with our Comprehensive Cancer Center members to pursue a wide range of research opportunities.

Held over 4-6 weeks, this is a unique opportunity for visiting faculty to carry out original research on questions related to their interests in collaboration with host faculty with diverse research interests in state-of-the-art facilities here on UVA Grounds. These experiences provide a path for additional future collaborations. Additionally, the data generated by the visiting faculty can be used at their home institutions to inform and excite their students about population, clinical, translational, and/or basic cancer research. Last year, STRIVE proved to be an extremely positive experience for both hosting and visiting faculty and provided a platform for long-term collaborations, mutually beneficial professional interactions, and relationships that persist today.

Through the STRIVE program, visiting faculty are offered:

  • A weekly stipend of $900, lodging and travel expenses, and additional support upon request.
  • Weekly dialogues with UVA trainees and faculty to share insights and research experience.
  • Activities and events centered around career and professional development, research, teaching, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Is this opportunity something that faculty at your institution would find to be of interest? If so, would you be willing to spread the word?  Please feel free to share the attached flyer and encourage any interested individuals to contact me or anyone listed on the flyer for more information. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) and a faculty position at their home institution. Applications open on February 1, 2023, and are reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis. We’d love to speak with anyone interested to provide more details.
